Expanding
Skills in Mathematical Analysis and Techniques. The emphasis of this program is
on mathematical analysis and techniques.
It stresses training in a broad array of mathematical areas including
real and functional analysis, and applied and computational mathematics. The
requirements for this degree allow students to prepare for entry into the Ph.D.
program in (applied) mathematics or for employment in teaching, business,
industry, or government. Many graduate
students earn this degree along the way to earning their Ph.D. in our doctoral
program. Students who successfully complete
this program will be able to: Demonstrate mastery of graduate-level courses in
mathematics covering a range of topics, including mathematical analysis,
mathematical methods and modeling, computational mathematics, and operations
research. Demonstrate mastery of graduate-level courses in at least one area
outside of mathematics. From the precise
mechanics of the inner workings of living cells, to predicting how fluids and
structures interact, Rensselaer mathematicians are continuing an establish
tradition of harnessing mathematics to support engineering and scientific
pursuits for the good of our 21st-century world. Each Master’s student must
participate in a Capstone Professional Experience, by registering for and
completing one of the following alternatives: a Master’s Project in
Mathematics, MATH 6980 and a Master’s Practicum, MATH 6970, such as a graduate
cooperative internship.
