A one semester experience for an international student in of the grade year (Grades 1 to 8) at the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board offers a blend of academic immersion and cultural adaptation. During the semester, the student follows Québec’s Programme de formation de l’école québécoise (PFEQ), which emphasizes literacy, numeracy, science, social studies, arts, and personal development. In the early grades (1 to 3), the semester would focus on strengthening foundational skills reading short texts, writing simple sentences, mastering addition and subtraction, and exploring science through observation and hands on activities. In the middle grades (4 to 6), the experience shifts toward more structured learning, including essays, fractions, decimals, project based science, and broader social studies such as Canadian history and geography. By Grades 7 to 8, the semester introduces subject specialization, with algebra, literary analysis, lab based science, and civic responsibility, preparing students for secondary level expectations. Beyond academics, the semester provides international students with opportunities to experience Canadian classroom culture, bilingual learning (English and French).
