The
department offers graduate programs in mechanical engineering, aerospace
engineering, and nuclear engineering and science. To accommodate a student’s
career plans and interests, the graduate programs are structured to allow great
flexibility in choosing appropriate courses, while ensuring sufficient depth
and breadth. The student’s faculty adviser has the knowledge to make
suggestions of specific courses to further the student’s educational goals. Aeronautical
engineering focuses on the analysis, design and operation of structures,
vehicles and systems (e.g. aircraft, helicopters, drones) which nominally
involve safe, sustained and controlled atmospheric flight. It can also involve
other vehicles and systems such as wind-turbines, Formula One race cars and
submarines which operate in aerodynamics or hydrodynamics environments. The
Aeronautical Engineering program at RPI is accredited by Engineering
Accreditation Commission of ABET, under the commission’s General Criteria and
Program Criteria for Aerospace and Similarly Named Engineering Programs.
