Welcome to the BSc. Journalism - Social Justice Journalism

Journalists with a background in social justice journalism are ready to report on some of the most topical issues facing the world today. Students will learn how to understand and convey complicated information in a nuanced manner, keeping in mind key societal context, as they examine stories and groups that mainstream media often underserves. This concentration will show students the best practices for social justice journalism and how these core tenets can apply to a variety of topics, from crime and courts to sports and food writing. The degree is ideal for those interested in a liberal arts approach to mass communication, especially if planning to pursue graduate studies. Students will participate in academic media research and writing. Majors examine media messages in historical and contemporary media, plus critique visual images and their impact on society. They also explore how and why media influence audience perception and behavior.

Career Path

Graduates with a concentration in social justice journalism will be prepared to use their knowledge to become exemplary, informed communication professionals. Possible career paths include: Arts and entertainment critic, Business communications specialist, Digital content specialist, Editor, News reporter, Nonprofit communications, Online or multiplatform journalist, Public relations/marketing manager.

English Language Requirement

Middle Tennessee State University will accept, for the purposes of meeting the English proficiency requirement, English taken in 12 year education or English is designated as the primary and official language, and the principle language of instruction. If you do not meet the English language requirements yet, you can achieve the level you need by successfully completing a pre-sessional English programme with the university or submit  

1. English language proficiency at a minimum of IELTS band 6.5 (or equivalent) or PTE Score or Duolingo English Test score before you start your course.
