When you pursue your Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling (MSMHC) at the university, you’ll gain core counseling, case conceptualization, diagnostic, and treatment planning skills. Plus, you’ll train in a variety of therapeutic approaches and techniques so you can meet your clients’ diverse needs. You'll train to function in a variety of community mental health settings (e.g., clinics, hospitals, prisons, college counseling centers, day treatment programs, rehabilitation facilities, outreach programs, after care centers, etc.). As you systematically complete the curriculum, you'll develop a competency base from which to perform effectively in your area of specialization.
Effective clinical mental health counselors are strong communicators, active listeners and empathetic, compassionate people who can make genuine connections with their clients.
