Students completing the Bachelor
of Science in Family & Consumer Sciences Education program at Southeast
Missouri State University receive a K-12 certification and are trained to teach
a variety of different subject matters such as: Child Development, Family
and Personal Relationships, Foods and Nutrition, Clothing Construction and
Fashion and Interior Design. The aim of FCS courses is that all students
increase their ability to act responsibly and productively, work cooperatively,
apply concepts of balancing school/work and family, create solutions to
critical and emergent issues, utilize technology effectively in personal and
family settings, and maintain healthy lifestyles. FCS education provides the bridge
needed by all students to deal with life and career issues (*AAFCS Rationale). As a family and consumer sciences education
major, you’ll learn to teach a variety of subjects such as child development,
family and personal relationships, foods and nutrition, clothing construction
and fashion, and interior design. The Family and Consumer Sciences
graduate certificate program provides students with the knowledge and skills to
positively impact the quality of individual and family life. The coursework
provides students with the ability to amplify critical-thinking skills to
address problems in diverse family, community, and work environments. Program
graduates will enhance capacity-building skills that empower individuals and
families to thrive in an ever-changing society.
Career Path
Graduates of this program may be employed in the following
areas: Educators (public and private institutions) at the basic levels. Technical
experts (in food, garment and textile industries). Entrepreneurs (in
hospitality and cottage industries). Human resource developers in early
childhood development and rehabilitation centres. Institutions such as social
welfare and community development, armed forces, prisons.
