Welcome to the BSc. Education (Social Studies Education)

The BA program in Social Studies Education prepares students to teach history and the social sciences in grades 5 through 12. Course offerings examine global perspectives, multicultural education, education for democratic citizenship, and social justice issues. Our social studies education degree program is designed to provide you with the skills, insights, and knowledge to pass the state teaching certification required to become a social studies teacher. You’ll be well-prepared to embark on your career path in the teaching of social studies and other related career paths. We teach future social studies teachers to think about facts, such as historical dates, events, names, and places, as if they are building blocks. As a social studies teacher, you can help students use these blocks to put current events into context and build a broader understanding. It is important to give students intentional exposure to cultures they see through globalization in the world today. The framework for teaching social studies, developed by faculty in our program, reflects this. The Bachelor of Science in Education with Composite Major in Social Studies is designed to give you real-world experience in middle and secondary school classrooms. Your courses will prepare you to teach and advocate for a diversity of learners. The program culminates in a student teaching assignment where you'll have the responsibility for instruction and assessment.
