About

Chemical engineering requires a broad knowledge of science to solve problems involving the production or use of chemicals in the food production, cosmetics, or energy sectors. Students graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering with the option to minor in polymer science and engineering. The core chemical engineering curriculum at The University of Akron includes mathematics, science and chemical engineering fundamentals. Students focus on the practical aspects of engineering, including: how to design and cost manufacturing plants, analyze and interpret experimental and production data, and how chemical processing affects people and the environment. Experience chemical engineering firsthand through our state-of-the-art research facilities: Catalysis Research Lab, Multiphase and Solids Processing Lab. The work in these labs includes research into: biocompatible polymeric materials, polymer synthesis, biological cellular and enzymatic processes, nanocomposite materials, computational molecular science, micro-scale separations, novel catalytic reactions, stem cell research. Gain important practical professional experience through the optional cooperative education program. Through co-op, you’ll alternate semesters of work and school following your sophomore year. As an added benefit, you’ll earn a competitive salary. Join one of the award-winning UA design competition teams open to all engineering students, including Akronauts Rocket, Chem-E Car, and Formula team.
