The Communication Studies degree equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to evaluate the role of communication in society and effectively develop messages to address organizational and community challenges. Students study communication practices, concepts, and theories that can be used to help build and maintain relationships in personal and professional contexts.  This major provides students with hands-on learning activities, internships, and co-curricular opportunities. Communication Studies graduates have strong communication, analytic, and critical thinking skills. They are prepared to craft meaningful messages and lead productive discussion and debate in the workplace and broader community. Our graduates enter careers in a variety of sectors, including business, government, non-profit, healthcare, and education. The curriculum covers both applied and theoretical approaches to all aspects of the field, including media law and ethics, video and audio content creation, editing, producing, and writing for various platforms. Our production equipment is current and cutting edge. The School of Communication offers an array of hands-on learning experiences:  media production labs, desktop publishing facilities, social media lab, Z-TV student-run television station, television production studio, post-production suites and multimedia classrooms, WZIP-FM, student-run radio station serving Northeast Ohio.

English Language Requirement

The University of Akron will accept, for the purposes of meeting the English proficiency requirement, English taken in 12-year education, or English is designated as the primary and official language and the principle language of instruction. If you do not meet the English language requirements yet, you can achieve the level you need by successfully completing a pre-sessional English programme with the university or submit 

1. English language proficiency at a minimum of IELTS band 6.5 (or equivalent) or PTE Score or Duolingo English Test score before you start your course.
