Grade 1

Grade 1 education is the first step in formal primary schooling, designed for children typically aged 6 to 7 years old. At this level, the curriculum builds foundational skills in literacy, numeracy, and social development while fostering curiosity and a love for learning. Language and Literacy: Learning to read simple words, sentences, and short stories. Introduction to spelling, phonics, and basic grammar. Developing writing skills through copying, short sentences, and beginner compositions. Building listening and speaking skills through storytelling, discussions, and oral exercises. Mathematics: Counting, number recognition, and understanding place value (ones, tens). Basic addition and subtraction. Introduction to shapes, patterns, and simple measurements (length, time, etc.). Problem-solving through real-world examples. Science: Exploring the natural world: plants, animals, and the environment. Simple experiments to observe and understand phenomena like weather, seasons, and water cycles. Introduction to basic human anatomy and health practices. Learning about the community, family, and cultural traditions. Arts and Creativity: Drawing, painting, and crafting to express ideas. Singing songs, rhythm activities, and basic musical instruments. Encouraging imagination through creative play and drama.

English Language Requirement

York Catholic District School Board will accept, for the purposes of meeting the English proficiency requirement or English is designated as the primary and official language and the principle language of instruction. If you do not meet the English language requirements yet, you can achieve the level you need by successfully completing a pre-sessional English programme with the school.
