The concentration in English
Language Linguistics will engage students in the formal study of the English
language and introduce them to theoretical and practical applications of the
scientific study of language. This concentration considers the anatomy of sound
production, levels of structure in language: phonological (sound),
morphological (meaningful segments), syntactic (interrelation of words in a
sentence). Pursuing this concentration will be beneficial to students wishing
to pursue careers in English language instruction, speech language pathology,
lexicography, and communications, in addition to students moving on to graduate
studies in theoretical or applied linguistics, computational linguistics, or
TEFL/ESL.
Career Path
Degrees in English increase
opportunities for success in a constantly changing job market. An emphasis on
clear and logical communication prepares students for a wide range of
occupations, rather than emphasizing one or two vocational tracks. Students in
the program have gone on to such positions as Advertising/public relations

non-profit organizations, Editor, Lawyer (after law school), Librarian, Manager,

Middle Tennessee State University will accept, for the purposes of meeting the English proficiency requirement, English taken in 12 year education or English is designated as the primary and official language, and the principle language of instruction. If you do not meet the English language requirements yet, you can achieve the level you need by successfully completing a pre-sessional English programme with the university or submit
