The Biotechnology degree and
certificates prepare graduates for careers in the life science industry and for
transfer. Students receive hands-on training in biology and chemistry and
master a variety of skills essential to the field of biotechnology. Biotech
technicians perform experiments and assays, manufacture products, or assist
with research. Key tasks include testing procedures, material processing,
equipment maintenance, inventory control and data collection and evaluation.
Technicians also observe and document safe practices, quality assurance, record
keeping and compliance with government regulations. Biotechnology is a
fascinating combination of genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry,
microbiology, and cell biology and is applied in many fields, including
chemical engineering, information technology, and biorobotics.
Career Path
Many graduates seek employment in
laboratory settings assisting researchers in a variety of areas, including
pharmaceuticals and medical research, as well as governmental and legal issues.
Potential job titles include environmental engineering technician, agricultural
and food science technician, biological technician, environmental health and
safety technician, chemical technician, and medical or clinical laboratory
technician.
