The
Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at RPI has a long history of
innovation in education and for excellence in laboratory instruction. In
addition to a strong focus in the traditional areas of chemistry we offer
courses and research programs in the rapidly developing frontiers of modern
science, including biochemistry, biophysics and biotechnology, materials and
polymer chemistry, and medicinal chemistry. Students
in the Chemistry M.S. program have access to the same opportunities to
experience research in the frontiers of chemistry and interdisciplinary fields
as students in the Ph.D. program, but in a less intense manner and with
emphasis on ensuring a sound program of coursework. Students must complete 30
credit hours of research and course work, 15 of which must be at the 6000–9990
level. In addition, these students must submit a research thesis. Students who successfully complete this program will be
able to demonstrate: Exhibit knowledge of chemical principles, theories and
their applications across the overall field of chemistry. Demonstrate
familiarity with current developments and demonstrate knowledge of the chemical
literature. Complete a research in chemistry. Communicate at the level of a
professional scientist.
