Welcome to the BA. German Philology

Our German philology program not only teaches German at an expert level, but also provides practical abilities and skills necessary for a successful career in language services as a teacher, translator, communication and intercultural integration specialist, editor, or entrepreneur.
You will acquire basic scientific knowledge and competences in the four areas of studies: modern German literature, medieval German literature, linguistics and German as a foreign and second language. At a more advanced stage in your studies, the curriculum provides you the opportunity to set individual focal points: You can specialise in individual subject areas through freely selectable courses and complete a non-university internship. Thereby, you can individualise your qualification profile and adapt it to your professional goals and subsequent master's programmes.
This degree combines philosophy with the study of German, a widely spoken language around the world and highly sought after for business, research and trade. German will give you direct access to the intellectual history, cultural production and political debates in German-speaking countries. The course provides a valuable skill set, ideally tailored to the increasingly globalised workplace.
Career Path
Your in-depth understanding of language will open numerous paths with an international dimension, and you'll have developed excellent all-round communication skills that will make you a strong contender for openings in the media, PR, and similar areas. Many of our graduates go straight into business services, marketing, advertising, management, banking, or communications.
