The Bachelor of Science in
Mathematics with an option in applied mathematics and statistics gives students
the opportunity to focus in statistics, industrial mathematics or computational
mathematics. As an mathematics and statistics major, you’ll be focused on
calculus, discrete mathematics, probability, and statistics, which complement
the theoretical and applied components chosen by students. In addition, the
program will give you the opportunity to: Work closely with qualified, diverse
faculty who prepare you for a variety of careers in business and industry. Earn
real-world experience working with the Applied Statistics Center to analyze
real-world data sets and by internship opportunities with corporations in
metropolitan areas such as St. Louis and Memphis. Our lecturers are passionate
about their subject, with modules informed by cutting-edge research. You can
shape your degree to suit your interests; you could discover units like Complex
Networks and Probability alongside your core modules, or choose optional units
like Financial Risk Management or Maths in Schools to prepare you for a
particular career. In your final year, you will pursue an independent project
on a topic you are passionate about, supervised by one of our world-leading
experts.
Career Path
Mathematics and Statistics
graduates are actively being recruited by engineering and computer companies,
banking, science and financial consulting firms, as well as biomedical and
imaging enterprises. Applied Mathematics and Statistics graduates are also
prepared to enter graduate school. Examples of job titles include math
instructor, actuary, database administrator, financial analyst, logistician,
mathematician and statistician.
