About This Programme

The Bachelor of Arts and Science in Environment (BASE) is CBU’s first fully interdisciplinary degree, designed to prepare students to contribute to a sustainable future. Rooted in the natural beauty and resources of Cape Breton Island, the program reflects the university’s commitment to teaching and research in environment and sustainability, enriched by Indigenous perspectives. BASE immerses students in three streams simultaneously: a science concentration, an arts/social science concentration, and a core set of environment themed courses tailored to current faculty expertise and pressing global issues. Respect for Indigenous knowledge is a guiding principle, with opportunities to take Mi’kmaq Studies courses that foster responsible and inclusive approaches to environmental practice. With dedicated professors, modern facilities, and unparalleled research opportunities, students gain wide ranging skills that bridge disciplines and prepare them to address complex challenges. Attracting learners from around the world, BASE empowers graduates to make a positive impact on communities, industries, and ecosystems by uniting the arts and sciences in the pursuit of sustainability.
