The Department of Sociology is committed to providing students with the tools to engage, and the skills to solve, real-world problems (e.g., health/well-being, environmental and social justice, inequalities). Our graduates have strong analytic and communication skills, can think critically and act creatively to address social problems. By ensuring that all students apply their learning through hands-on research projects and internships, we graduate informed students who are prepared to work in areas designed to address systemic problems facing our local, regional and global communities.  A BA degree in Sociology enables students to develop a deep understanding of the social world and how it operates as well as how personal issues and public concerns interconnect. In addition, a sociology degree develops students' research knowledge and skills in ways that enable graduates to confidently apply the critical thinking, analytical, and communication skills that that are crucial for success in today’s ever-changing world.. The study of society and the social frameworks within which we live our lives. Sociology is a study of social life at every level, from two-person relationships to the rise and fall of nations and civilizations in an extended examination of the ways societies work or fail to work. In Sociology you will learn: How to see and understand the world with greater clarity, using cutting edge social science methodologyHow social institutions like healthcare, law, family, and education impact our lives directly and indirectly. The tools necessary to address the systems of inequality and how to create solutions.

English Language Requirement

The University of Akron will accept, for the purposes of meeting the English proficiency requirement, English taken in 12-year education, or English is designated as the primary and official language and the principle language of instruction. If you do not meet the English language requirements yet, you can achieve the level you need by successfully completing a pre-sessional English programme with the university or submit 

1. English language proficiency at a minimum of IELTS band 6.5 (or equivalent) or PTE Score or Duolingo English Test score before you start your course.
