The mission of the Department of Statistics is to provide students with a quality education in statistics, in which they acquire fundamental statistical skills and develop a sense of statistics as a profession. In addition, our graduates will be prepared for advanced studies in statistics and related disciplines, and for the diverse uses of statistics in business, industry, government, scientific research, and society. Statistics provides the reasoning and methods for producing and understanding data. Statisticians are specialists, but statistics demands they be generalists as well. Working in statistics enables you to combine your interest with almost any other field. Statisticians provide crucial guidance in determining what information is reliable and which predictions can be trusted. They often search for clues to the solution of a scientific mystery and keep investigators from being misled by false impressions. Statistics is one of the most important fields of study in the world. The techniques we use to model and manipulate data guide the political, financial, and social decisions that shape our modern society. Our interdisciplinary research recognises that mathematics, including what can be very abstract mathematics, is an essential part of research in many other disciplines. Our School has an international reputation in many areas including semi-group theory, optimisation, probability, applied statistics, bioinformatics, and mathematical biology. We are genuinely innovative and student-focused. Our data scientists carefully consider how not to lie, and how not to get lied to with data. Interpreting data correctly is especially important because much of our data science research is applied directly or indirectly to social policies, including health, care and education.
