About

The Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Nuclear Engineering (MANE) is home to three highly ranked, integrated programs offering students a world-class education. Nuclear research at RPI focuses on advancing nuclear technology across areas such as radiation detection, nuclear materials, power systems, and radiation applications in medical and industrial fields. Through interdisciplinary research, MANE faculty contribute to innovations in reactor design, radiation protection, nuclear non-proliferation, and medical therapies. Research areas includes Applied Radiation Technologies, Nuclear Materials, Nuclear Power Systems, Radiation Protection, Medical and Industrial Uses of Radiation. Boasting unique and state-of-the-art research facilities, Rensselaer Nuclear Engineering students have access to a large electron accelerator, radiation detection laboratory, and modern computer interfacing technology. With today's need for inexpensive sources of energy, Rensselaer nuclear engineering graduates are in great demand for positions in industry or graduate study. Rensselaer launched its plan for NE research in the late 1950s when the Atomic Energy Commission funded a project to construct a linear electron accelerator in 1958.
