The Clinical Mental Health Counseling master’s program provides graduate-level training in the art and science of mental health in order to produce Professional Counselors/Professional Clinical Counselors who effectively enhance the lives of individuals, groups, and communities. The degree leads to professional identity founded on a holistic perspective, knowledge about bio-psycho-social causes of distress, and social/occupational impairments, skills related to human development as well as the treatment of psychopathology and competence in advocacy and outreach. It is expected that graduates from the Clinical Mental Health Counseling master’s program will have gained: a professional identity founded on human growth/wellness from a holistic perspective, knowledge about bio-psycho-social causes of client distress and social/occupational impairments, skills related to the enhancement of human development as well as the treatment of psychopathology, and confidence/competence related to improving one’s community through individual, group, and societal advocacy and outreach. The Clinical Mental Health Counseling master’s program’s mission is to prepare ethically and culturally informed professional counselors who competently diagnose and treat a variety of life concerns including but not limited to mental disorders using ethical and evidence-based interventions. Clinical Mental Health Counseling students will gain: Knowledge about bio-psycho-social causes of client concerns and emotional, social, occupational impairments. Skills related to promoting human development throughout the life span. Professional identity founded on human growth/wellness from a holistic perspective. Competence related to improving one's community through individual, group and societal advocacy and outreach. Demonstrate ethical and evidence-based diagnosis knowledge and skills using culturally appropriate interventions with diverse populations.
