Welcome to the BSc. Communication Disorders

Communicative Disorders majors study the anatomical, physiological, neurological, linguistic, acoustic, cognitive, social and cultural bases of communication disorders. This degree will prepare you for further study as a professional speech-language pathologist or audiologist. The Communication Disorders curriculum provides specialized preparation for students who would like to work as Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLP-A) and those who plan to enter a graduate program in speech-language pathology or audiology. Students supplement their academic study of typical communication development, communication disorders, and clinical management with observation of the clinical experience. You’ll learn basic clinical methods and have the opportunity to observe practicing clinicians working with both child and adult clients with communication and swallowing disorders. The Communication Disorders major may be taken in conjunction with any minor, if the student wishes to have a minor concentration. Gaining invaluable experience by completing a clinical practicum, delivering services directly to clients in the on-campus Center for Speech and Hearing.

Career Path

Speech and hearing sciences career opportunities are expected to grow faster than average through the end of calendar year 2031. This is due to several factors including an aging baby boomer population with increased possibilities of oncoming neurological disorders with accompanying speech, language, swallowing, and hearing impairments. Employment opportunities are also increasing due to improving survival rates of premature infants and trauma and stroke patients in need of assessment and intervention.
