The Master of Arts in English provides students with strong practical and theoretical grounding as they prepare to move forward into careers or into graduate and professional schools. Students will learn advanced methods for deeper study of literature written in English, the fundamentals of composition as a discipline, and practical writing skills through courses in professional and rhetorical writing. Courses will place texts within wider cultural and multicultural debates. Through assigned writings students will articulate informed viewpoints on real-world issues and practice various forms of professional and critical writing, learning to interpret texts in contexts ranging from academic debate to the contemporary classroom to a variety of professional settings. The MA in English provides students with a strong practical and theoretical grounding as they prepare to move forward into careers or into graduate and professional schools. It is designed to prepare students to pursue a doctoral degree or to teach at the secondary level by giving them an advanced understanding of their subject matter.

English Language Requirement

The University of Akron will accept, for the purposes of meeting the English proficiency requirement, English taken in 12-year education, or English is designated as the primary and official language and the principle language of instruction. If you do not meet the English language requirements yet, you can achieve the level you need by successfully completing a pre-sessional English programme with the university or submit 

1. English language proficiency at a minimum of IELTS band 6.5 (or equivalent) or PTE Score or Duolingo English Test score before you start your course.
