The Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in Polymer Option provides students with a greater concentration in chemistry and is accredited by the American Chemical Society. Theory taught in the classroom is applied in undergraduate laboratory classes and research projects. As one of the physical sciences, chemistry deals with the nature and properties of matter at the most fundamental level molecular and atomic. In determining the properties and composition of matter, chemists are often able to develop new materials and find practical uses for them. The Department of Chemistry maintains:$8.6 million worth of nuclear magnetic resonance instrumentation, mass spectrometer, X-ray diffractometers, IR-UV-Vis spectrometers, liquid and gas chromatographs to identify, purify and characterize chemical compounds Chemistry is an experimental science that seeks to understand the structure and function of molecules. Chemists synthesize new materials, and study their properties and how they interact with other compounds. The BS degrees offered by the department prepare students for independent laboratory work and research. Our faculty all have received federal and industrial support for their research projects and all regularly publish in scientific journals. Opportunities are expected to grow for chemists, especially in drug research, development, testing and manufacturing industries.
