This degree program prepares
teacher-leaders to have a deep understanding of the mathematics and statistics
they will teach and knowledge about different pedagogical strategies they can
apply in the classroom. Students take five courses focused on mathematics
education, beginning in their sophomore year. In addition, students take
courses specific to teaching content in the middle grades. Our professional
courses in the junior and senior year offer relevant pedagogical experiences,
emphasize teaching mathematics with technology, and provide rich field
experiences in math classrooms. The Elementary Education/Middle School
Math program prepares students for the classroom through coursework on campus
and fieldwork within schools. In addition, you’ll be prepared to integrate
technology into your classroom as a beginning teacher.
Career Path
Graduates are prepared to teach
mathematics to students in middle schools (grades five through eight)
throughout the country. The job placement rate for mathematics teaching
graduates is excellent. There is a critical shortage of qualified math teachers
in Indiana and throughout the United States.
